Embedding problems of division algebras

A finite group G is called admissible over a given field if there exists a central division algebra that contains a G-Galois field extension as a maximal subfield. We give a definition of embedding problems of division algebras that extends both the notion of embedding problems of fields as in classical Galois theory, and the question which finite groups are admissible over a field. In a recent...

Galois Cohomology of Fields without Roots of Unity

There is a standard correspondence between elements of the cohomology group H(F, μn) (with the trivial action of ΓF = Gal(Fs/F ) on μn) and cyclic extensions of dimension n over F . We extend this to a correspondence between the cohomology groups H(F, μn) where the action of ΓF on μn varies, and the extensions of dimension n of K which are Galois over F , where K = F [μn] and [K :F ] is prime t...

On Absolute Galois Splitting Fields of Central Simple Algebras

A splitting field of a central simple algebra is said to be absolute Galois if it is Galois over some fixed subfield of the centre of the algebra. The paper proves an existence theorem for such fields over global fields with enough roots of unity. As an application, all twisted function fields and all twisted Laurent series rings over symbol algebras (or p-algebras) over global fields are cross...

On the Classification of Four-Dimensional Quadratic Division Algebras over Square-Ordered Fields

A square-ordered field, also called Hilbert field of type (A), is understood to be an ordered field all of whose positive elements are squares. The problem of classifying, up to isomorphism, all 4-dimensional quadratic division algebras over a square-ordered field k is shown to be equivalent to the problem of finding normal forms for all pairs (X, Y ) of 3× 3-matrices over k, X being antisymmet...

Doubled quadratic division algebras

The concept of doubling, introduced around 1840 by Hamilton and Graves, associates with any quadratic algebra A over a field k of characterstic not 2 its double V(A) = A×A, with multiplication (w, x)(y, z) = (wy− z̄x, xȳ + zw). It yields an endofunctor on the category of all quadratic k-algebras which is faithful but not full. We study in which respect the division property of a quadratic k-alge...
